Harnessing Nanoscale Surface Interactions: Contemporary Synthesis, Applications and Theory provides coverage of contemporary theoretical and experimental approaches to understanding the interactions of molecules with nanomaterial surfaces and how to utilize these processes for improved synthesis and application of materials. The book reviews recently developed theoretical techniques to explore bonding interactions in nanoclusters and small molecules, along with modern molecular dynamics approaches for investigation adsorption of large molecules on nanomaterials. Novel experimental approaches are described that provide improved control of the
This project consisted of fundamental and applied research of advanced in-situ particle-beam interactions with surfaces/interfaces to discover novel materials able to tolerate intense conditions at the plasma-material interface (PMI) in future fusion burning plasma devices. The project established a novel facility that is capable of not only characterizing new fusion nanomaterials but, more importantly probing and manipulating materials at the nanoscale while performing subsequent single-effect in-situ testing of their performance under simulated environments in fusion PMI.
Stress induced electrical charges, action potential and electret behavior of bone, muscles, skin and nerve cells have been known for some time. Electrically Active Materials for Medical Devices builds on this knowledge and encourages readers to understand and exploit electrical activity in biomaterials from native, derived, or completely synthetic origin, or a combination thereof. It presents data and insights from both historic and contemporary research that spans over six decades with a view to generate convergence of interdisciplinary knowledge and
Nanomedicine has emerged as a novel field in medicine integrating nano-scale technologies with materials sciences, chemistry and biology. The medical application of nanotechnology has the potential to revolutionize diagnosis and therapy and bring this new field from a notion into reality while impacting the lives of millions around the world. This second edition compiles and details the latest cutting-edge research in science and medicine from the interdisciplinary standpoint who are currently revolutionizing drug delivery techniques through the development of nanomedicines.
Colloidal Foundations of Nanoscience, Second Edition explores the theory and concepts of colloid chemistry and its applications to nanoscience and nanotechnology. The book provides the essential conceptual and methodological tools to approach nano-research issues. The authors’ expertise in colloid science will contribute to the understanding of basic issues involved in research. Each chapter covers a classical subject of colloid science in simple and straightforward terms, addressing its relevance to nanoscience before introducing case studies. Sections cover colloids rheology, electrokinetics, nanoparticle
This book addresses the recent developments in the investigation and manipulation of liquids at the nanoscale. This new field has shown important breakthroughs on the basic understanding of physical mechanisms involving liquid interfaces, which led to applications in nanopatterning. It has also consequences in force microscopy imaging in liquid environment. The book proposes is a timely review of these various aspects. It is co-authored by 25 among the most prominent scientists in the field.
Comprehensive Biomaterials II, Second Edition brings together the myriad facets of biomaterials into one expertly-written series of edited volumes. Articles address the current status of nearly all biomaterials in the field, their strengths and weaknesses, their future prospects, appropriate analytical methods and testing, device applications and performance, emerging candidate materials as competitors and disruptive technologies, research and development, regulatory management, commercial aspects, and applications, including medical applications. Detailed coverage is given to both new and emerging areas and the latest
This book offers readers cutting-edge research at the interface of polymer science and engineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, and biology. State-of-the-art developments in microscale technologies for cell engineering applications are covered, including technologies relevant to both pluripotent and adult stem cells, the immune system, and somatic cells of the animal and human origin. This book bridges the gap in the understanding of engineering biology at multiple length scale, including microenvironmental control, bioprocessing, and tissue engineering in the areas of cardiac,
This volume provides an introduction to the state-of-the-art of controlled nanoscale motion in biological and artificial systems. Coverage includes the control and function of protein motors, the physics of non-equilibrium Brownian motion, and the physics and fabrication of synthetic molecular motors. The chapters in this book are based on selected contributions on the 2005 Nobel Symposium on Controlled Nanoscale Motion.
Nanoscale Graphitic Carbon Nitride focuses on multi-functional applications including energy conversion, storage and healthcare. Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride materials have attracted much attention in recent years because of their similarity to graphene. They are composed of carbon, nitrogen and some minor hydrogen content. In contrast to graphene, g-Graphitic carbon nitride is a medium band-gap semiconductor and in that role an effective photocatalyst and chemical catalyst for a broad variety of reactions and applications. This book covers the fundamentals and applications
This title is a comprehensive text that addresses key aspects of nanomedicine such as properties occurring at the nanoscale that have unique medical effects, great molecular knowledge of the human body and disease processes, and apparent clinical translation as opposed to narrow insufficient texts that address only a few topics and attempt to “rebrand” established drug delivery. It will clearly define the field which is needed due to the immaturity and broad nature of the field. The book is aligned
This book is indexed in Chemical Abstracts ServiceSoft and bio-nanomaterials offer a tremendously rich behavior due to the diversity and tailorability of their structures. Built from polymers, nanoparticles, small and large molecules, peptoids and other nanoscale building blocks, such materials exhibit exciting functions, either intrinsically or through the engineering of their organization and combination of blocks. Thus, it is not surprising that a variety of challenges, for example, in energy storage, environment protection, advanced manufacturing, purification and healthcare, can be
Millions of patients suffer from end-stage organ failure or tissue loss annually, and the only solution might be organ and/or tissue transplantation. To avoid poor biocompatibility–related problems and donor organ shortage, however, around 20 years ago a new, hybridized method combining cells and biomaterials was introduced as an alternative to whole-organ and tissue transplantation for diseased, failing, or malfunctioning organs—regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. This handbook focuses on all aspects of intelligent scaffolds, from basic science to industry
